L'importante è partecipare...You win or lose...

(sotto "Notizie" e "Comunicazioni"/loghi in concorso)

Some time ago I'd sent in this logo for a competition , for the initiative "M'ammalia-The Mammal week"(the latin name is split by a hyphen so that in Italian it also means: it tantalizes me. Its not my idea and it's very witty).
I enjoyed playing with letters and images, and couln't help inserting the element that unifies all mammals...
After a long wait I got the response, rather humiliating: I scored 13th out of 15. Maybe I'm not a great designer, but I thought the idea was simple but cheeky and could draw attention to the event.
Too bad. In 4 days I'll be in Namibia and will forget about it...

Preparandomi al Viaggio...Preparing for The trip...

Grazie!

Hardly more than a week before leaving, I wanted to explain why I haven't been posting (or painting) much lately. I'm closing a project for a picture book to be sent to a competition, and getting ready for the Trip of my life: Namibia!
My first time in Africa, in black Africa: it's a craving I've been feeling deeply for a lifetime, and I finally grabbed the opportunity to join a group of friends, naturalists and another artist too (there will be two of us to hold up the rest...) I'm SO excited!
Thanks to my precious husband who financed me, I will be leaving on the 16th for an itinerary of 3 flights from Rome/Frankfurt/Johannesburg/Windhoek, nearly 24 hours spent between airports and flights.
We will be driving through the north-western part of the country,  including the desert, the coast, and Etosha Park naturally.
I'm afraid I won't be able to render the visions I'll witness, and that the excitement will paralyze my hand...I haven't yet decided exactly what art materials I should bring. I rely on my new camera...
Have you been there? I'm looking for advice! Thanks!

Mostra annuale soci dell'AIPAN
Dal 2 (inaugurazione ore 18) al 10 luglio 2011.
Hotel Castello, Piazza Battaglione Alpini, L'Aquila.
Sempre aperto.

Nature always finds a way to regenerate itself, provided it gets the slightest opportunity.
It is adaptable, it evolves, it follows climate and seasonal changes.
L'Aquila is going through a long, hostile and uncertain season.
We bring to its inhabitants a sample of nature, a little of its beauty, strength and perseverance.
In this exhibition, our commitment as nature artists of the Italian Society for Nature Art AIPAN goes hand in hand with that of sketchers with the Carriola di disegni.
If you can, come and visit us.

Annual exhibition of the AIPAN Society

L'attesa de L'Aquila- L'Aquila is looking on

Favolosi.

Significati paralleli: l'aquila attende...L'Aquila attende.

L'attesa-tecnica mista su carta, cm. 50x70.  The wait, mixed media on paper.

L'Aquila is the town where the Italian Society of Nature art is going to hold the annual exhibit in July.
It is also the town hit by the  2009 earthquake and that is still waiting to be recontructed. L'aquila, finally, means "the eagle" in Italian.
There are several reasons why I meant to dedicate a picture to the town and its symbol. One is in the banner here on the right, the Carriola di disegni blog, to whom I take part. Another is that I'm a sentimental person, thinking that art can convey more than just a good reproduction of the visible.

"The wait" is born as a study, on spolvero paper, testing hydrosoluble pastels mixed with dry gesso pastels and charcoal. I love being able to do and undo, put on and erase until the cocktail feels right.

I meant to convey a sense of suspended atmosphere. The eagle looks on towards a remote town, up in the mountains. It isn't defined but left open, like a concept. Its wings are folded and the eye is severe and alert. There is a strong contrast between the dark rock that supports it and the  hazy, luminescent atmosphere beyond.

The original model was taken from the Oxford Museum of Natural History, the Pitt Rivers.

Parallel meanings: the eagle is waiting..L'Aquila is waiting.

I spent the last week-end at the Abruzzo National Park, to take part, with some artists from Ars et Natura, to an auction sale of our paintings in favour of a charity called Telethon, whose target is funding research on rare genetic diseases. It was a success, and all our 15 watercolous were sold, for a total sum of over 800 €. The ones with the red arrow are mine, 2 made on the spot and 4 brought from home.
This was on the saturday. Next morning, under a blue sky, the group went for a walk to the Camosciara, an enchanting crown of dramatic peaks encircling a verdant valley. There we saw, and I painted, a very beautiful and rare orchid, the Lady's slipper (Cypripedium calceolus). It grew on the bank of a brook, and I drew and painted it perched on a few inches of earth, in order to see it from a better angle.
I finished a few leaves and the background once home.
And to finish off a lovely week-end, the local elections and the defeat of Berlusconi's side. Maybe we can make it, as a country, maybe there's still hope.

Inghilterra, o cara... England, dear England...

Here we are, back from nine wonderful days spent in my second homeland, Britain. Family greeted us in a warm embrace, the weather was warm, dry but changeable; flowers bloomed everywhere and were our landmarks on our way home. The northern attitude to protection hits us, coming from neurotic Rome, as easy-going: low walls, open gates, old and unsafe locks on doors, curtains open as the people living behind them; such kindness, relaxed attitude to life,  respect of rules,  care for gardens and parks, clean streets, buses and trains, everywhere upkeeping and care. On the other hand, police and remote camera control are everywhere. Food is excellent, from vegetarian sandwich to fusion cuisine in bistrots and at home. We were really spoilt, and thank you Enitan and Jessy for all your time!
I tried to sketch with byro pens, gel pens, and pencil, but it wasn't always easy and certainly not always satisfactory! Here's a selection in chronological order (five days in London and three in Oxford).

The view from our room in Walthamstow, London; Victorian homes, two storeys high, modest but dignified and cute.

In Enitan's fireplace no fire, but many small flames on coloured candles...I like to imagine it when they're all lit up. Coloured ball-point pens.

A day dedicated to shopping with mother, and meeting uncle Anthony  and aunt Liz at a lovely restaurant. Few quick sketches in our bedroom first, then at the station and M&S...

Mentre mia madre fa acquisti...While my mother shops in Marks & Speencer's...

Fascinating and wild, Hampstead cemetery hosts Constable's grave. Sitting on a tombstone, I sketched posh houses through rich vegetation. The blotch is because my gel pen exploded on the plane, as I tried to retouch...

Purtroppo l'autostrada è molto vicina...e si sente!
Here I am in Binsey, a tiny old village near Oxford, for a quick sketch of Alison's beautiful house, from the big lawn. Unfortunately the highway is very close...and you can hear it!

Biro colorate.
Finally we're on the way home .We have loads of time in Gatwick, so I have fun trying to capture the fleeting poses of people who eat, walk, wait, stop a second, and then are gone. For the first time I insert some graphic (?) text to fill in voids. The result is a mess, but it's fun. Coloured ball-point pens.

Week-end in Veroli

A week-end spent with friends in their fantastic house in Veroli. Two indoor sketches with a gel pen, very suitable for fluid hatching and very smooth, liquid drawing. Bleeds nicely on absorben cheap Chinese sketchbook. A watercolour realized in front of a very ancient arch in the Old Citadel of Arpino. The cyclopic walls and gateway date back to the VIII-VII cent. b.C. and are in the Greek style.
