Piano piano...

Bozzetto olio finito. The finished oil bozzetto.

I have to admit that tackling mythical subjects like lions isn't easy for me; too much history and art are behind these living legends; useless telling myself they're only large pussycats.
In Etosha Park we had the chance to see many of them, and I spotted the first one, saying "lion" before I knew it. He was squatting laziliy in the tall grass, his mane untidy, not very handsome and quite far away.
Then we met a pack of lionesses with a few young males, and followed them shortly while they moved away from their resting area; when the leader stopped, they froze at the point that we thought our cameras where blocked (since we were looking through them).
We then found a pair of young males just by the road, next to the carcass of a young giraffe. They were digesting it and let us stay a long time, ignoring us.
I particularly like one portait I took and I'm working at it, going by degrees.
The first bozzetto is a mixed media on paper, measuring appr. 30 x 30 cm; the second one is oil on primed cardboard, smaller and more rectangular.
My intention is to blend the lion with the tones of the environment. I'd also like the work to be vibrant; and to decide on the best format. I'll try to get there...
