FIORISCE LA MIA ORCHIDEA-2. My orchid is flowering-2

Tempo fa ho pubblicato uno schizzo dei boccioli di una Phalaenopsis che mi era stata regalata a novembre 2009, e che per una volta sono riuscita a mantenere sana e far rifiorire. Ieri, con un po' di emozione, avevo notato che uno dei boccioli turgidi e gonfi mostrava una fessura...e stamattina era aperto. Avevo dimenticato che era bianca!
Mi sono affrettata a disegnarla in chiaroscuro, con matite nera, bianca, due grigi e una gialla. Ho rimosso dal disegno l'altro ramo, che non si decide a cicciare, nonostante un piccolo germoglio si affacci, come un occhio curioso, da mesi dallo stelo. Non aggiungeva nulla, anzi il sostegno di plastica avrebbe dato fastidio.


Time ago I started sketching my phalaenopsis orchid,tthat after more than a year since it was given to me, decided to bloom again.Yesterday, with some excitement, I'd noticed that one of its swollen buds showed a chink...and this morning I found it opened. I'd forgotten it was white!I immediately set out to draw it in chiaroscuro on tinted paper, using black, white, 2 gray and a yellow pencil. I decided to leave out the second stem, whose single bud keeps staring out like an inquisitive eye, without growing an inch; it wouldn't have added to the composition, on the contrary.

Capitelli medioevali di Sant'Ambrogio, Milano. Medieval capitals

In ottobre ero a Milano e ho fotografato gli affascinanti capitelli di Sant'Ambrogio, siti nel pronao. Non ve ne sono due uguali, e per lo più ogni lato del capitello è diverso da quello contiguo. Capolavori di forma e di senso estetico, le opere medievali hanno sempre esercitato su di me un fascino maggiore che  quelli di altre epoche; forse perchè rappresentano archetipi e stilemi formali che possono riscontrarsi in civiltà lontanissime, come quelle orientali o precolombiane.Mi da' una soddisfazione totale contemplare gli incastri, le linee, le ingenue-ma geniali-soluzioni trovate da questi oscuri maestri dello scalpello.
Così, avendo un po' di raffreddore e di tempo, mi sono finalmente dedicata a lavorare dalle stampe di quelle foto.

When in Milan last October, I took many pictures of the medieval capitals in the court of Sant'Ambrogio Basilica. I feel a total satisfaction in the contemplation of medieval masterpieces, maybe because they are formally archetipical, and are close to other, very distant decorative languages like the oriental and the Mesoamerican. The apparently simple, yet genial formal solutions are for me a great aesthetic joy. Having a cold, and some time on my hands, I dedicated this day to drawing from the prints of those pictures.

Il briefing per questa serie consisteva nel raccogliere in ogni illustrazione i segni d'aria, d'acqua, di fuoco e di terra. L'apporto di Photoshop e l'aiuto di Fabio, mio marito  e grafico esperto, sono stati fondamentali. Ho realizzato a china  i 12 segni, ma tutto il resto, sfondi, stelle, sfumature e composizione, sono state elaborate al computer con un lungo lavoro di rifinitura.

The biefing for this series consisted in grouping together in each illustration the signs of water, air, earth and fire. Apart for the design of he 12 signs themselves, which I did in ink, all the rest required a lot of work on Photoshop, and couln't have come out so well without my husband Fabio's help and his experience as a graphic designer.

ULTIMO BIGLIETTO DELLA SERIE- THE LAST CARD OF THE BATCH

Il "Villaggio alpino" è il dodicesimo biglietto e con questo si chiude la serie degli "archi".

Nel prossimo post non la farò così lunga, e metterò tutti  e quattro i biglietti a soggetto zodiacale.

biglietto di auguri per mia madre- my mother's birthday card

Ieri abbiamo festeggiato gli 80 anni di mia madre Edda, che è inglese, e naturalmente ho fatto il biglietto di auguri -oltre a un po' di cibarie, fiori, e organizzazione!-che è anche stato il logo della festa. L'ispirazione su cui ho lavorato è stata di creare, per una data così importante, un lavoro calligrafico, cercando di fondere il nome e l'età in un'immagine. Il fiore che ne è scaturito ha poi dettato la frase che chiude l'immagine.Tutti gli ospiti ne hanno ricevuto una copia, insieme alla riproduzione di uno schizzo di fiori, eseguito in gioventù da mamma.
Realizzato a mano e rifinito in Photoshop.
Purtroppo ho beccato l'influenza pochi giorni prima, e il lavoro per la festa mi ha lasciata esausta. Però è stato un successo enorme, anche perchè mamma non ne sapeva nulla!

Yesterday we had my mother's 80th birthday party, and I naturally produced the birthday card, as well as some food, flowers, and organization! The solemn date inspired a calligraphic work, and I strived to blend her name Edda with her age into one image. The flower that came out of it inspired the sentence below. This design became the"corporate image" for the party and each guest got a copy of it, together with a reproduction of one of my mother's own sketches of a bunch of flowers.
Unfortunately I caught the flu only a few days before the party, and it left me exhausted, but it was a tremendous succss, considering that my mother knew nothing about  it!

Non alba ma tramonto, non fiori ma frutti; un paesino dietro, Pietrabuona in  provincia di Pistoia, che avevo dipinto anni fa. Atmosfere diverse per momenti diversi.
Not dawn but sunset, not flowers but fruits, and the village in the background, Pietrabuona near Pistoia, that I'd painted years ago. Different atmospheres for different moments in life.

Potrebbe essere un'immagine del Lago di Como. Un'altra atmosfera sospesa, di attesa e speranza. Un barcaiolo mattiniero rompe lo specchio dell'acqua.
