Wellington lies on coast and hills overlooking the bay, along a tectonic fault. The green belt has preserved a valley where a dam created a water reservoir for the town. This valley was chosen for the creation of Zealandia, an ambitious project that intends to recreate, in 500 (!) years, the originary new Zealand forest ands fauna, deeply altered since the arrival of man, around 900 years ago, and of the alien species that he introduced.
Zealandia is completely fenced off and no mammal except man can penetrate it. Inside, native birds are reproducing successfully and hope is that when a substantial population is achieved, they will move out and recolonize the silent forests of the Country.
Nothing can be done to keep out blackbirds, sparrows, starlings minyahs and al the flying aliens that found themselves at home in NZ and appreciate the feeders!
The splendid Te Papa Museum "The treasure chest", modern and enveloping, brings you to discover many aspects of Polinesian culture and history, not to mention the sections on Natural History, the story of Kiwi people and the children's area. We stood fascinated by the mistery and beauty of Polynesian carvings and by the deep animism that is embedded manufacts, endowed of a name and of their own power.
