NUOVA ESPERIENZA:SUMI-E. A NEW EXPERIENCE: SUMI-E

 Stamattina, grazie a Carlo, ho partecipato a un corso di Sumi-e, la tecnica pittorica giapponese basata sui pennelli calligrafici e sul nero di china. L'uso del pennello e la sua struttura sono totalmente diversi dai nostri (per esempio lo si usa spesso di piatto, pigiandolo, o con la unta sfrangiata); e anche la preparazione ad ogni pennellata. Il docente ci ha messo a nostro agio, e  intervenendo per mostrarci come fare, ci ha seguiti dal primo passo fino alla raffigurazione di alcuni soggetti vegetali.
I fogli sono 43x65 cm.

 This morning I attended a seminary on Sumi-e, a japanese painting technique that uses only black ink. The use of the brush and its nature are totally different from our watercolour brushes (for instance you use it flatttened out, or with a fuzzed point), and also the preparation to each stroke. The teacher was very relaxed and helped us from step one, the first attempts to value the amount of water versus ink in the brush, then the first straight strokes in all directions, ending after a few hours in painting bamboo and other models of plants. The sheets of paper are 65x43 cm.

Questa pianta simile a un ciuffo d'erba mi ha insegnato che in Sumi-e, il primo piano è sempre molto scuro, e gli elementi più lontani sono chiari, come nella nebbia. Inoltre, bisogna scordarsi i valori reali dei toni, e perfino le forme, e trasmettere solo la vivacità e l'energia della pianta.

This plant, that looks like a clump of grass, taught me that in Sumi-e, the foreground elements are the darkest, and that the background ones fade out as if in fog. Moreover, you must forget about real tonal values, and even shapes, and try to convey the vivacity and energy of the plant.

 Ho dipinto le canne perchè le conosco bene, e il mio cervello le ha confuse con il bambù, che è molto diverso! Non è stata una figura brillante...Naturalmente non c'era il modello...

I painted canes, because I know them pretty well and my brain mistook them for bamboo!

SETTIMO BIGLIETTO-SEVENTH CARD

Vi offro un tuffo nel Mediterraneo, un plenilunio con un vaso di belle di notte sul davanzale di una stanza. La luce è accesa, e proietta l'ombra dei fiori sulla parete. Il mare è calmo e sulle increspature brilla la luce della luna- che illumina un villaggio di pescatori. Potrebbe essere  Italia, Grecia, Turchia...è il Mare Nostrum.

I offer you a plunge in the Mediterraneum, a full moon and a pot of moonflowers on a windowsill. There's  a light on in the room, since the shadow of the flowers is projected on the wall. The sea is calm and the  moonlight shines on the tiny wave crests- and on a fishing village. It could be Italy, Greece or Turkey...it's the Mare Nostrum.

Disegni di mia madre

...chi ha letto il mio profilo sa che mia madre, Edda Harris, è stata artista e scultrice - con un'ottima mano e preparazione, e una grande passione per Cézanne. Sfortunatamente decise di smettere, con  4 figli...  Ho cominciato a disegnare "sul serio" sulle pagine rimaste vuote dei suoi blocchi.

My english mom, Edda Harris, studied as an artist and sculptor- she  was very talented and prepared, and with a great passion for Cézanne. Unfortunately she decided to stop when she became a mother of 4.

I fiori nel vaso sono Iris sibirica, l'atmosfera e i mandorli in fiore suggeriscono l'arrivo della primavera.

The flowers in the pot are Iris sibirica, the atmosphere and the almond trees suggest the beginning of spring.

Questo biglietto, che rappresenta un arcobaleno dopo il temporale, potrebbe essere usato per fare pace.

This card, representing a rainbow after a storm, could be used to make peace.

un bel sabato- a good saturday

Ieri sono andata col mio amico Alessandro e il mio Swarovski al Parco del Circeo. Ero veramente felice di passare una giornata all'aperto, con il tempo buono, temperatura mite, e la possibilità di disegnare!
I risultati non sono esaltanti ma non mi importa. C'erano tanti uccelli a Cicerchia, a Fogliano e anche al mare, ma il vento che si è alzato ha portato una certa agitazione, e mentre le pavoncelle correvano qui e li, la spatola e la garzetta curavano le penne nuziali freneticamente, e i fenicotteri iniziavano il display. C'è decisamente aria di primavera.
Sul mare ho dipinto velocemente lo spettacolo delle onde in controluce, e i gabbiani comuni sulla riva , mentre Ale ha individuato delle sule giovani, quindi nere, che con i loro tuffi spettacolari pescavano al largo.Era difficile disegnare mentre il vento sbatacchiava le pagine dell'album, mannaggia a me che dimentico sempre le pinze!

Yesterday I finally spent a lovely day out with my friend Alessandro and my Swarovski telescope.
We went to the Park of Circeo, rich in waters and just by the sea. Many were the birds and species, but very restless because of the wind and the atmosphere of approaching spring. Temperatures are very mild, and the egret and spoonbill were frantically preening their nuptial feathers, while flamingoes were beginning to display.My only option was to produce very quick and incomplete sketches of the restless birds. It was also difficult to paint by the sea because the wind buffeted the pages of my sketchbook, and I'd forgotten to bring clips! But I don't mind if the results are not super.
