Ancora piccoli doni dalla natura, more small natural presents

Davanti a queste erbe selvatiche, chiamate "erbacce", ho scelto una carta antica, Fabriano del 1947, di grammatura molto leggera. Per questo è venuto leggero anche l'acquerello, etereo e un po' giapponese, con rispetto parlando...
I chose a very thin, ancient Fabriano sheet for these common wild herbs. That's why, I suppose, the composition came out so airy and ethereal, somewhat japanese if I may say so.

 Il giorno dopo ho cominciato questa composizione di foglie di rovo in inverno. Sto migliorando il mio acquerello, e questa volta su carta Arches grana fine, che avevo sempre trovato troppo secca. Ora so che bisogna ammollarla ben bene prima di stirare il foglio.
Ho chiamato questa composizione "Festa d'autunno". Entrambi sono più o meno formato A4.



Next day I started this colourful detail of bramble leaves in autumn. I am improving on my watercolour skills, tackling Arches fine grain paper that I always found too dry. Now I know that it needs a good soaing before it's stretched. I called this composition " Fall party". 
Both are approx A4 format.

Studi di agama agama-Studies of Agama agama

E' complicato concentrarsi sui colori e le atmosfere africane quando fuori imperversa un nubifragio e il cielo nero  è rischiarato solo dai lampi...Questo splendido Agama, incontrato all'ingresso dell'area archeologica di Twifelfontein, in Namibia, si è prestato a farsi fotografare da vicino, apparentemente indifferente al nostro entusiasmo. Solo studiando le foto ho notato che, in quelle dove mi sono avvicinata di più, la sua livrea aveva assunto sul dorso una maculatura criptica (ma c'è poco da mimetizzarsi con una testa così...).
La complessità dell'anatomia, soprattutto facciale, e le sfumature riflettenti di questo meraviglioso sauro non sono state facili da rendere.

Its hard to concentrate on the african colours and atmospheres, when it's pouring outside ad the black sky is lit up only by lightning...This beautiful Agama, whom we saw at  the entrance of the Twyfelfontein site in Namibia, posed for us in a seemingly indifferent attitude. Only observing the pictures I took really close I realized that he'd changed to a more cryptical colouring (though there's little you can  do when you are such a red-head!).
The complexity of his anatomy, especially facial, and the shades of his reflecting livery weren't easy to render.

Week-end in Veroli

Da amici nella loro fantastica casa di Veroli. Due interni, con la penna gel, perfetta per schizzi fluidi e sciolti, su un blocco cinese economico ma con carta molto assorbente e adatta a questa tecnica, anche all'acquerellatura. Un acquerello realizzato alla Civitavecchia d'Arpino, nelle mura ciclopiche, arco molto particolare, antichissimo (VII-VIII sec. A.C.) di derivazione greca.

A week-end spent with friends in their fantastic house in Veroli. Two indoor sketches with a gel pen, very suitable for fluid hatching and very smooth, liquid drawing. Bleeds nicely on absorben cheap Chinese sketchbook. A watercolour realized in front of a very ancient arch in the Old Citadel of Arpino. The cyclopic walls and gateway date back to the VIII-VII cent. b.C. and are in the Greek style.

Schizzi a Fiumicino- Sketching in Fiumicino

Sotto le piste di decollo dell'aereoporto di Fiumicino c'è un laghetto artificiale, in una zona recintata. Un tempo era un laghetto di pesca sportiva, ora è inutilizzato. Per arrivarci siamo passati sulla spiaggia, che è vergognosamente sporca. Il laghetto è tranquillo, si fa per dire, visto che ogni minuto passa sopra le nostre teste, bassissimo, un aereo con un frastuono assordante cui gli uccelli sono del tutto indifferenti.
Per via delle canne sono costretta a disegnare in piedi, usando il cannocchiale, il che è molto faticoso per me, dovendo reggere il blocco, gli acquerelli e lo straccetto con la protesi, che pesa parecchio. Comunque sono piuttosto soddisfatta. Dapprima mi sono dedicata alle folaghe e ai tuffetti, poi a uno splendido cormorano in livrea nuziale che è stato immobile per tutto il tempo che lo disegnavo, sopra uno strano rudere; poi si è sgranchito qando ho finito il disegno. Com'è stato gentile!

Under the airstrips of Fiumicino, Rome's airport, there is a small artificial lake that was once used for fishing, and is now unattended. To reach it we walked the beach, that is in unbearably dirty conditions,
and passed the barbed wire fences. The waters on the lake are clear, and the birds have learnt to live with the airplanes that take off over their heads with a terrifying roar. All around are the traces of rabbits.
Because of the reeds I had to sketch standing up , looking through the telescope. Its a challenge for me, since I wear a prosthesis that weighs on my short forearm, and holding the book, the watercolours and the rag is an effort. Anyway, I am rather satisfied with the outcome, especially with the cormorant, that graciously posed for me immobile.

uno schizzo in villa- a sketch at the park

Stamattina giornata splendida e soleggiata, ho portato Amélie a Villa Flora e mi sono portata anche gli acquerelli. Il caldo era primaverile e i cani pochi, infatti non ne ho dipinti perchè o stavano o addosso a me o dietro la mia panchina.

A splendid sunny day, I took Amélie to the Villa Flora park and brought my watercolours and small sketchbook. It was hot, and  the dogs were surprisingly few, so I couldn't include them in the painting, they stayed either on top of me or behind my bench.

In giro per Roma- Roaming Rome

Sabato sono andata a disegnare Santa maria in Trastevere in preparazione di un progetto per turisti.

Luce cristallina ma in veloce mutamento. Ho impiegato 2 orette felici ma- ahimé- la croce del campanile è uscita dal disegno! Devo perfezionare l'inquadratura e l'osservazione. Ma inizio a capire come trattare la carta Arches.
Saturday I went to Santa Maria in Trastevere to sketch, preparing a project focused on tourists. A crystalline light kept shifting fast. I spent a couple of happy hours but- unfortunately- the cross over the bell-tower didn't fit in. I must improve on observation and scale. But I'm starting to understand how to handle Arches paper.
