Altri due africani...Another two african...

Una piccola tavola ad olio, due orici ripresi dai miei studi in modo sintetico, senza pianificazione....
A small oil on board, two oryx taken from my studies in a very basic way, without any real planning...

...e la prima di una piccola serie di donne Himba, questa molto giovane, adolescente.
Acrilico su tavola con uno strato di carta velina incollato sopra, a rendere l'idea della fragilità e dell'antichità di questa cultura, per alcuni "primitiva", per me "naturale".
Non hanno nulla di superfluo, tranne qualche povero ornamento, e non hanno bisogno di nulla, quindi sono ricchi. E ci ricordano che, in fondo, l'avere non è l'essere.

...and the first of a small series on Himba women, this one being a teen-ager. Acrylic on board with a layer of tissue paper glued over it, hinting to both fragility and ancientness of this culture, called "primitive" by some, but "natural" by me.
They have nothing superfluous, except a few ornaments, thay need nothing, hence they're rich. And they remind us that, fundamentally, what we are is not what we possess.

A passo forzato sto producendo per la mostra, rifacendo un viaggio attraverso gli studi, il taccuino e le foto. Un viaggio che coinvolge più dello sguardo, e va a creare risonanze con i ricordi, suscitando un nuovo entusiasmo. Provo tecniche e modi nuovi di lavorare, mi diverto, soffro, ritocco...e poco a poco emerge un'Africa molto filtrata e rielaborata.
Il leone è nella sua veste finale ma non ve lo ripropongo, spero che verrete a vederlo. Qui pubblico due lavori ad olio, uno su tela e l'altro su una piccola tavola. Presto metterò altre cose...

I'm working hard for the exhibition on Africa, travelling again through studies, sketchbook and photos. A trip that goes farther than the eye and creates resonances with my memories, bringing forth a new enthousiasm. I try new techniques and styles, I have fun, I suffer, retouch, toil...and little by little another Africa emerges, filtered and re-elaborated.
The lion is now in its final livery but I'm sparing you, I hope you'll come and see the original. I post here two oils, one on canvas- unstretched- and the second one on a little board. I'll post more soon...

E' complicato concentrarsi sui colori e le atmosfere africane quando fuori imperversa un nubifragio e il cielo nero  è rischiarato solo dai lampi...Questo splendido Agama, incontrato all'ingresso dell'area archeologica di Twifelfontein, in Namibia, si è prestato a farsi fotografare da vicino, apparentemente indifferente al nostro entusiasmo. Solo studiando le foto ho notato che, in quelle dove mi sono avvicinata di più, la sua livrea aveva assunto sul dorso una maculatura criptica (ma c'è poco da mimetizzarsi con una testa così...).
La complessità dell'anatomia, soprattutto facciale, e le sfumature riflettenti di questo meraviglioso sauro non sono state facili da rendere.

Its hard to concentrate on the african colours and atmospheres, when it's pouring outside ad the black sky is lit up only by lightning...This beautiful Agama, whom we saw at  the entrance of the Twyfelfontein site in Namibia, posed for us in a seemingly indifferent attitude. Only observing the pictures I took really close I realized that he'd changed to a more cryptical colouring (though there's little you can  do when you are such a red-head!).
The complexity of his anatomy, especially facial, and the shades of his reflecting livery weren't easy to render.

farsi stuzzicare dalla routine -being tickled by routine

Davanti alla prospettiva di dover disegnare, per l'ennesima volta, tracce ed escrementi (che noia!) per dei pannelli, mi sono data la possibilità di divertirmi con gli sfondi. Ho preso gli acrilici, carte diverse, una spatola...
ora spero che non vengano rifiutati. Mi ricordano le illustrazioni degli anni '70, quando c'era molta più sperimentazione.E' necessario ogni tanto farsi stuzzicare dai propri rifiuti interiori, e dall'affacciarsi della noia.

Faced with the umptieth commission to draw scat and traces for an educational panel, I decided to have fun with the backgrounds. So I took different kinds of paper, acrylic colours, a knife and paintbrushes...Now I'm hoping they won't be  rejected.
They remind me of some illustrations of the '70s, when there was so much experimentation.
One must be ready to be tickled by our inner refusals, by the sense of boredom.

Non ho lavorato intensamente al leone, sono presa da un lavoro di grafica, ma avendo la tavolozza con i colori freschi e il quadro davanti, ho fatto delle piccole aggiunte e  migliorato il contrasto. Sento che sono vicina al punto dove è meglio fermarsi e confrontare, con distacco, quello che è uscito fuori da quello che si voleva fare. Avevo un'idea ambiziosa ma troppo vaga all'inizio, e il leone che ne è nato mi piace, ma non è quello. Mi piace aver colto la sua espressione all'erta, averlo fuso con il fondo abbastanza bene, aver sperimentato pennellate ed effetti nuovi. E' ancora troppo realistico per me, ma credo che al contrario è quello che la maggior parte delle persone apprezza di più.
Ho messo la firma, poi quando tutto sarà asciutto passerò con delle velature...e per vedere  il risultato venite alla mostra, tra due mesi! Non mancherò di farvelo sapere!
Aspetto suggerimenti per il titolo...

I haven't worked too intensely on the picture, I'm actually on an assignment, but I have given from time to time fresh highlights and contrasts here and there. I feel I'm near to  that point when one has to stop and compare the result with one's initial intentions. I had an ambitious but too vague idea to begin with, and I do like the lion that came out of the process, but it is not the same. I like the way I managed to render his alert expression, how it merges with the background, and the new brush and knife strokes I experimented with. I am dissatisfied with the still too realistic rendering, but on the other hand I know that's exactly what most people appreciate.
I have signed it, and when it'll dry out I'll finish it with a tinted glaze...the result will be hung in two month's time here in Rome.
I ask you if you have any suggestions for the title...

Addio Wangari Maathai- Farewell Wangari Maathai

 Se ne è andata oggi una grande persona, un'immensa donna, che ha creato un movimento straordinario: il Green Belt. Mobilitando la popolazione africana e mondiale, ha fatto si che venissero piantati 30 milioni di alberi negli ultimi anni. Fu isignita del Nobel per la Pace nel 2004. Muore una persona, rimane il mito e l'esempio.

We have lost a great person, and an immense woman; she created the Green Belt Movement, and through its energy she made it possible to plant 30 million trees in the last years. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 2004.
The person died, but the example and the myth remains.

Leone- un passo avanti. Next step ahead

Purtroppo non riesco a fargli una foto decente, escono sempre riflessi strani e il copo viene troppo rosso...
C'è ancora un bel po' da fare.
Sorry I can't manage to take a decent picture, there are always strange reflections and the body's definitely too red....Still some work to do.
